Nepal is counted among one of the underdeveloped
countries of the world. No wonder there are so many diseases that are
prevalent in Nepal. Apart from the major diseases and infections that
are common in South-Asia, Nepal has a wagon-full of other disease too.
You will need a day or two to acclimatize in Nepal. Till then, you will
need to avoid street-foods and drinks. Actually most of the diseases
prevalent in Nepal are either water or air borne.
Some of the most common diseases of concern in Nepal are Malaria,
Kala-azar, Japanese Encephalitis, Tuberculosis, Dysentery, Hepatitis A
and HIV/AIDS. Estimates from the World Health Organization predict that
conditions will not improve over the next 8 to 10 years. According to
Public Health Department in Kathmandu, the major health problems are
Dysentery, Parasites, and other water borne diseases. In the villages of
Nepal, major problems are Skin disease, which results from lack of
proper hygiene and sanitation, acute respiratory infection, and lung
disease that result from indoor cook fires and malnutrition.
Avoid drinking water from unknown sources. Try to carry packaged
drinking water wherever you go and don't share your glass of water with
anybody. Keep packets of Oral Re-hydration Solution (ORS) with you.
Always demand for Mosquito repellents in hotels. Mosquitoes cause some
of the major diseases in Nepal such as Kala-azar, Malaria, Chikungunya
and Dengue.
