Kanak
Bhawan is another important temple in the city of Ayodhya. Situated near
Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan is frequented by scores of tourists every
year. The Temple is famous for the images of Sri Rama and Sita wearing
gold crowns. Because of this very reason, it is also popularly referred
to as Sone-ka-Ghar at times.
The temple has an interesting legend behind it. It is said that Rani
Kaikey had built it for Sita. Kaikey happened to be the stepmother of
Lord Rama and was instrumental in exiling Lord Rama and Sita to forest.
Therefore the claim that she built it because of her affection with Sita
seems to be concocted and mala fide at the same time; possibly to put
her in good picture. The temple has subsequently been restored time and
again by various kings. It is mentioned that Rani Krishnabhanu Kunwari
of Orccha built the present temple in 1891.
