Firozabad town in Uttar Pradesh is the premiere center of glassware manufacturing in India. Although this town produces a large variety and range of glassware in India, it has become synonymous to Bangles. Bangles are the Indian Glass-bracelets that are wore by women. They come in thousands of designs, patterns and colors and are universally liked. The economy of the city is almost entirely dependent upon the manufacturing and export of Bangles.
The ancient name of town was Chandwar nagar that was renamed Firozabad by Akbar The Great. The city is the home to the glass industry since 15th century. At that time, apart from bangles, Jhad-Phanus or Indian Chandeliers was the major produce here. Apart from that, heavily decorated phials of Itra, Scents and other cosmetic products were also made. As time passed, the city started producing items like Bangles, Kangans and Kara etc for the general public.
Near about 400 industries are registered in Firozabad that manufacture glass products. Around half of the products are exported to different countries.
