India that is fast becoming the most favoured destination among travellers witnessed a total of 26. 32 lakh foreign tourist arrivals between January- June compared to 23.76 lakh in the same period. With tourist arrivals in the last 6 months up by 10% compared to last year, the tourism sector is looking very positive and upbeat in the run-up to Commonwealth Games.
According to the figures revealed by tourism ministry, the foreign exchange earned by India increased by 28.1% in June, this year over June 2009. Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEE) during January-June were $6,842 million with a growth rate of 36.6% compared to $5,007 million in 2009. Foreign tourist arrivals in India during the month of June were 3.70 lakh compared to 3.42 lakh during June 2009 and 3.42 lakh in June 2008.
Some of the main tourism places in India include Taj Mahal located in Agra city of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi’s Akshardham Temple, Hawa Mahal in Rajasthan, Ajanta Ellora Caves, Mysore Palace, Golden Temple or Sri Harmandir Sahib situated in Amritsar, Punjab and others. India witnesses more than 5 million annual foreign tourist arrivals and 562 million domestic tourism visits.
