Victoria and Albert Museum is one of the oldest
museums situated in the city of Mumbai. Relatively unknown to the
tourists, this museum is situated on the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road in
the Byculla locality. It stands in the middle of the famous 'Jijamata
Udyan' of Bombay and is today known as Bhau Daji Lad Museum. The idea of
setting up the Victoria and Albert Museum was put forward by Dr. Buist
(a collector) in 1884, when India was being ruled by the British East
India Company.
The rich collection of the museum comprises of more than six thousand
relics. These include items like sculptures, pottery, coins, ivory work,
paintings, etc. The building of Bhau Daji Lad Museum has been divided
into a number of sections, based on the social and cultural life of
India. The museum also serves as sort of reference center on the history
of the country, with its compilation of over 4,000 books and
manuscripts.
A large number of visitors can be seen viewing the possessions of the
Victoria and Albert Museum. With time, the condition of the museum
deteriorated. However, since quite sometime, it is being renovated under
the supervision of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage
of Bombay. Situated within the Jijamata Udyan, with its lush greenery
and blooming flowers serving as the perfect backdrop, the museum looks
just adorable.
