Bombay
Natural History Society is headquartered inside the Hornbill House,
situated on the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road of Mumbai. It claims the
distinction of being the largest Non Governmental Organization (NGO),
not only in Maharashtra, but the whole of India, dedicated to
conservation of nature and natural resources, along with education and
research in the natural history. The society was founded in the year
1883, based on the traditions of Dr. Salim Ali - a renowned
Ornithologist and Naturalist.
Bombay Natural History Society of Mumbai also serves as a museum, where
one can see an amazing collection of the specimens of nature, like
beetles, reptiles, etc. The society basically acts as a platform, where
discussions and observations are organized on a regular basis, on the
natural history of the country. It is a global society, with more than
30 countries acting as its members. All of them have a single aim in
mind i.e. to conserve nature with the help of scientific research.
As a part of its conversation and research efforts, Bombay Natural
History Society sponsors studies in Indian wildlife and conservation.
The society also takes out a four monthly journal (The Journal of the
Bombay Natural History Society) and a quarterly magazine (Hornbill).
Tourists visiting Mumbai can gain a temporary membership of the society
and have access to its library, lectures and slide shows. General public
is not allowed inside the society and you will need prior permission to
pay a visit.
