Vihar
Lake, the largest lake in the Mumbai city, is situated inside the
premises of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The water needs of the lake
are met through the rain water, collected in the catchment area provided
by the Powai-Kanheri hill ranges. The lake lies between Tulsi Lake and
Powai Lake, the other two lake situated in vicinity. Vihar Lake serves
as one of the sources serving Mumbai's water needs, especially of its
southern region. The overflow level of the lake is approximately 80.42
m.
Earlier; people were allowed free access to the Vihar Lake. However,
since 1995, the access has been curtailed to quite an extent. You can
catch a glimpse of the Vihar Lake in many Bollywood movies, for which it
is one of the most popular shooting locations. The lake is visited, in
large numbers, by the local people as well as the tourists coming to the
Mumbai city. It has become a very famous venue for picnics, because of
its beautiful surroundings. The serenity of the Vihar Lake provides the
best relief from the mundane and hectic city life.
