Powai
Lake is situated in the Powai locality, a northern suburb of Mumbai.
Apart from being popular for its beauty, the lake is also known for
being situated near Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) and
National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE). One can easily
reach here by taking a local train till the Kanjurmarg station and from
there, you can board a rickshaw. An artificial lake, Powai is currently
facing the problem of silting. Work is being carried out to cure it of
its hyacinth population.It is said that the place where Powai Lake now lies was once the location of Powai Valley. It was a small village, with several huts and a small rivulet sourced by the rain waters of the lowest slopes of the Western Ghats. During the British rule, the government decided to create a lake from the rivulet, to augment the water supply. The lake was created in the year 1891, by constructing two stone dams across two hillocks.
The lake, which was built at a cost of approximately 6.5 lakh rupees, was named as the 'Powai Lake', after Framaji Kavasji Powai Estate. Though the lake water is now unfit for drinking, its beautiful and serene surroundings continue to attract visitors. An ideal spot for picnickers, Powai Lake lets people lose themselves in its tranquility and revitalizes their energy. You can take a walk along its banks, lie down in the lap of nature or just look at the splendor of nature!
