Punjab is a developed state, with a well-established telecom system. The state is soundly connected with the outside world through a wide network of telecom. Almost all the places of Punjab have the facility of phone, by which one can be connected to many people, both within and outside the state. So, before visiting Punjab, make sure you carry STD Codes of some important places. This helps in having a hassle free connection to the desired destination.
There are two important things, which you need to remember while dialing any fixed-line number in Punjab. Firstly, if you are calling from some other states in India, first dial the STD Code of the place and then the desired number. For example, if you want to dial a number in Amritsar dial (0183) followed by the required number. Second thing is: in case you are calling from abroad, you need to dial 091, which is the ISD Code and then the STD Code of the place, followed by the required number.
Almost all the phone booths in Punjab and even the telephone directories have the STD Codes of the major places. You can always make use of them. However, having your own copy of the important STD Codes of the place is always a positive sign in knowing the place better and with less effort.
