Bathinda, named after the Bhati Rajput Kings who ruled it, is one of the oldest cities in Punjab and the current administrative headquarters of Bathinda District. It is situated in the Southern part of Punjab State, in the heart of Malwa region. Bathinda district is surrounded with Sirsa and Fatehabad districts (of Haryana) in the south, Sangrur and Mansa districts in the east, Moga in the northeast and Faridkot and Muktsar in the northwest. It covers total area of 3335 sq km and is sixth largest in the state, in terms of area. It consists of 285 villages, out of which 281 are inhabited and 4 are uninhabited; 8 towns and 1 census town. Damdama Sahib is one of the Five Takhts or Seat of Temporal Authority of Sikhism. Located in village of Talwandi Sabo, 28 km to the southeast of Bathinda, the gurdwara was officially recognized as the Fifth Takht of Sikkhism, on November 18, 1966.
