India´s first "Elephant Village" in the northern state of Rajasthan was recently unveiled by Rajasthan tourism minister Bina Kak. The village that is closely located to the historical Ajmer fort houses the mahouts - keepers - and their elephants.
The project named ‘Elephant Village’ was jointly funded by the Central and Rajasthan government. Currently, 51 elephants have been accommodated where each has got its own marked house. The rest of the elephants would get the quarters in the near future. The project that was in the pipeline for the last 40 years has been finally completed due to the state government’s efforts.
Ajmer fort that has 113 elephants registers over 1.4 million tourists annually. Rajasthan Tourism Minister Bina Kak, said it was a great gift to the animal.
“The elephant ride is much in demand by both foreign and Indian tourists. Tourists feel like royalty when riding an elephant,” says Shyam Gupta, vice-president of Elephant Owners’ Association. The village has a man-made pond to provide water for the animals and a veterinary clinic. The Rajasthan government is hoping that the elephant village proves to be a hit with tourists.
