Pune is located near the western margin of the Deccan
Plateau, at 18° 31' North and 73° 52' East. Just like the rest
of the country, the city experiences three main seasons in a year -
summers, winters and monsoons. The summer season stretches on from the
month of March, till mid-June. During this time, the maximum average
temperature remains in the usual range of 30 deg C to 38 deg C. Quite
unlike the other major cities in Deccan Plateau, Pune witnesses' extreme
heat in the month of April.
In May, locally developed showers ensure that the temperatures in the
city do not rise to an unbearable extent. However, the high humidity
caused by the rains may become a reason for discomfort. The only relief
during the summer season is provided by the nights, which are quite
cooler in Puna as compared to the other cities in Maharashtra. The
reason for this being the considerable altitude at which it is perched.
Around mid-June, monsoon winds start blowing, bringing with them the
much needed rains.
The annual average rainfall received by the city is approximately 722
mm, most of which is expected between June and September. During this
time, the average temperature in Pune hovers somewhere around 20 deg C
to 28 deg C. With the onset of October, the nights in the city started
experiencing a fall in temperature and with November, winter season sets
in and it lasts till February. Windy days, clear skies and cool nights,
with the temperature often falling below 10 deg C, characterize this
season, which is also regarded as the best time to visit Pune.
