Churches in Delhi:
Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Cathedral of The Sacred Heart is situated near the Gol Post Office in New Delhi. Father Luke, from Franciscan First Order founded by St. Francis of Assisi, wanted to build a church in Delhi. So, he purchased the land near the Gol Post Office for the purpose. Henry Medd, a collaborator of Sir Edwin Lutyens and the designer of the Church of Redemption for the Anglicans, designed and constructed Sacred Heart Cathedral of Delhi. Teachings of Jesus are preached in the church throughout the year. Cathedral Church of the Redemption Cathedral of The Sacred Heart is situated to the east of Parliament House in New Delhi. The construction of the church took eight years and got completed in the year 1935. Henry Medd, who designed the Cathedral of The Sacred Heart, designed this church also. The shape of Delhi Cathedral Church of the Redemption looks like a birthday cake with a candle placed upon it. The interiors of the church are beautiful and magnificent. Infact, the simple and plain exteriors of the church are a complete contrast to the splendor of its interiors. St. James Church St. James Church is situated in the Kashmere Gate area of Old Delhi. Believed to be the oldest surviving Church of Delhi, it was constructed by James Skinner, the son of a Scottish father and a Rajput mother. James Skinner, a Maratha Colonel, got badly injured in a war in the early 19th century. He prayed to God and promised that if he survived, he would build a church as a commemoration of his faith in God. Fortunately he survived and as promised, he built as church, which is now known as the Delhi Saint James Church. The compound of the St. James Church still houses the grave of James Skinner, in front of the altar. |
