Surajkund
is situated approximately 20 km from the heart of Delhi, between the
villages of Baharpur and Lakkarpur. Located in the state of Haryana, the
village gets its name from a fabulous water tank housed inside it. It is
said that Suraj Pal, a Rajput King, got the tank constructed in the 11th
century. Surajkund, near Delhi, is the perfect place to spend a day
enjoying the rustic splendor of the city. It serves as the ideal break
from the hectic and stressful life of the cities. The first thing that
attracts you on entering Delhi Suraj Kund is the tank that merges
beautifully with the rocky terrain.
The population of Surajkund Village is quite less, mainly consisting of
cattle raisers or those working in stone quarries nearby. Away from the
hustle bustle of the city, this village seems to be enveloped in a time
wrap of its own. The fragrance of the food being cooked on earthen
chulhas (cooking range), lit with cow dung, fills your nostrils. The
forest nearby supports a rich flora and fauna. One of the main
attractions of SurajKund, near Delhi, is the annual Surajkund Crafts
Mela (fair). The fair takes place every year between the 1st and the
15th of February in the village complex.
During these fifteen days, craftsmen from all over India come to Suraj
Kund to take part in the Mela. Infact, the fair has become one of the
most important cultural fairs of Delhi. The venue of the Surajkund Mela
is around the boundary of the water tank. All types of artisans, be it
potters, embroiderers, weavers, wood carvers, metal workers, stone
smiths or painters, participate in the Mela. For entertainment purposes,
there are performances by folk dancers, musicians, acrobats and
magicians.
