In Kolkata, Park Street is a common name for all those who love to go on outings. It is one of the most prestigious thoroughfares in the city. The street was initially named after the deer park of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Calcutta, from 1773 to 1789, Sir Elijah Impey. Though the street was earlier known as Burial Ground Road and has recently been renamed as Mother Teresa Sarani, the common man refers to this posh street as Park Street till now.
Park Street has always been the center of outings in Calcutta. In the 40s, 50s and 60s, it had an exclusive reputation of having a wonderful nightlife in the city. The street was the center of amusement for all those who loved live music by popular bands, dance and cabaret. Even in the 70's and 80's, night life was concentrated in and around Park Street. Several noted musicians performed at the popular night spots, like as Trinca's, Blue Fox, Mocambo and Moulin Rouge.
Even today, Park Street is one of the most happening places in Kolkata. Apart from the nightlife it offers, it is also a wonderful place for dining out. All the famous restaurants you can think of in Kolkata are there on the Park Street, including the signature restaurant of ace cricketer Sourav Ganguly, which is known as Sourav's. That is why people fondly call it 'Food Park Street' as well. Various shops of apparel, cosmetics and electronic gadgets can also be found at the Park Street. Other than shopping, eating, clubbing and partying, you can also go to Park Street for a casual walk. While walking through the street, you will come across several notable buildings of the city, like the Asiatic Society, St. Xavier's College, a Seventh-day Adventist Church and the South Park Street Cemetery. A visit to Kolkata is incomplete without a rendezvous with Park Street.
