As Mahabalipuram is situated ashore the Bay of Bengal, it experiences Tropical climate. The summer sets in the month of April and persists till mid-June. The average maximum temperature in summers hovers around 35-38o C. The nights are relatively cooler due to its close proximity to the sea. The humidity during the summer months is quite high.
Mahabalipuram gets most of its rain from the northeast monsoon that sets in here around mid September and continues till mid December. During rainy season heavy rains can be a problem here in Mahabalipuram.
During the winter months (from November to February), temperature decreases to an average of 25o C but usually doesn't go below 20o C. The best time, therefore, to visit Mahabalipuram is from December until March, when the weather remains dry and cool.
