The state-owned Air India (domestic) in tow with private carriers Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines have declared that they are going to hike their prices from Friday, August 8, onwards. An official from the Jet Airways informed that the airline was hiking its fare for the economy class by 10 per cent and for the business class by five per cent.
An Air India officer stated that they too would be increasing fares by the same margin from Friday onwards. Both of these airlines said that the increase in air fare will apply to only domestic air routes. The Kingfisher Airline, on the other hand, announced that it will hike its base fare by 10 per cent from the same day.
The decision of these airlines comes even as the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) rose on Thursday. Almost half of an airline’s operating cost is because of the ATF prices. The spokesperson from Jet Airways, however, claimed that the fare price hike was due to a commercial judgment and had no relation with Thursday’s ATF hike.
The Air India spokesperson, however, clearly admitted that it was Thursday’s ATF hike that seemed to have led to an increase in the fare prices. Jet Airways, however, also declared that it was introducing ‘attractive advance purchase apex fares’ air passengers in the domestic segment.
